United Way of Northern Santa Barbara County Board of Directors Welcomes Dr. Sophia Ramirez Gelpi

Santa Maria, CA—June 5, 2024 —The Northern Santa Barbara County United Way is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Sofia Ramirez Gelpi to its Board of Directors. Dr. Sofia, a dedicated educator and academic leader, has called Santa Maria home for the past 14 years, alongside her supportive husband, Nathan, and their daughter, Sarah.

After an illustrious 25-year career at Allan Hancock College, Dr. Sofia decided to retire, looking forward to embarking on the next exciting chapter of her life. Her legacy as an educator, leader, and lifelong learner will continue to inspire many through her coming work with NSBC United Way.

Dr. Sofia’s journey in education began at the State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in 1988 and her Master of Arts in 1990. She continued her academic pursuits at the University of Southern California, obtaining her Ph.D. in 1995. With a teaching career spanning over two decades, Dr. Sofia initially served as an adjunct faculty member in the Los Angeles area. In 1997, she relocated to the Central Coast and joined the faculty at Cal Poly SLO until 1999. Since then, she has been an esteemed member of the Allan Hancock College faculty, earning tenure in 2004 due to her dedication and significant contributions.

Throughout her tenure at Allan Hancock College, Dr. Sofia has held numerous leadership roles. She served as Department Chair for four years, Curriculum Chair for six years, Program Review Committee Chair for one year, and Secretary to the Academic Senate for one year. Her expertise also benefited the statewide academic senate curriculum committee, where she contributed for a year.

In 2018, Dr. Sofia’s leadership skills were recognized with her appointment as an Academic Dean. Her commitment to community and adult education was further demonstrated by her role as co-chair of the California Adult Education Consortium for northern Santa Barbara County.

Her vast experience in education and leadership will undoubtedly contribute to the organization’s mission and community initiatives.

Outside of her professional achievements, Dr. Sofia is an avid reader and writer. She enjoys hiking, connecting with nature, and expanding her creative horizons through learning basic illustration using Procreate.
