Year Two and Still Growing Strong!
NSBC UW is entering their second year of implementing our Sammy Dream Big Financial Education Curriculum with 2nd and 3rd graders! This program, Literacy 2.O, is a unified, collaborative effort to provide a platform for school-aged youth to begin saving/investing with a goal-setting mindset. Keep reading to learn more!
Sammy Rabbit Money School
One of the cornerstones of the Literacy 2.O Framework is the Sammy Rabbit Money School activities. This year alone, Lyiam Gallo, Chief Impact Officer, along with his team, have already trained more than 120 student facilitators who are now delivering the Sammy Rabbit Money School curriculum to 500 or more students in 17 locations.
How It Works:
NSBC United Way is establishing the Sammy Rabbit Money School curriculum in local schools and directly with families and community-based organizations. This curriculum teaches young children the importance of setting goals and achieving dreams through saving for the future. Students and families who complete the six-week curriculum are invited to open a custodial savings account in the child’s name. Funds in the account are restricted until the child turns eighteen.
The United Way will deposit forty-four dollars ($44) in the account as seed money. Sponsors, donors and financial institutions provide a stable platform for students to realize a financially secure future. The family and the child will agree to make regular savings deposits based on lessons learned during the course. Literacy and family engagement programs offered by United Way provide the resources for personal growth.
Eddie Taylor, CEO of NSBC United Way explains, “Our goal will be to engage with 100% of the parents with 80% of the students opening savings accounts and 100% of them using the habits to receive the challenge match.“
We are excited to report that the Sammy Rabbit curriculum now has dozens of graduates and nearly all have opened accounts after achieving their first goal and earning $44 seed money deposited! Special thanks to CoastHills Credit Union for getting involved!
