For SBC Veterans & Homeless

This is a Santa Barbara county-wide AmeriCorps program, administered by California Volunteers and powered by Northern Santa Barbara County United Way and AmeriCorps. We recruit volunteers, conduct street outreach, find housing, and execute point-in-time canvassing counts. Teams of volunteers canvas countywide & document those experiencing homelessness. This information is used to plan local assistance & funding.

In Santa Barbara County, on any given night, there are over 2,400 individuals experiencing homelessness. We know it is a problem. It is our privilege to fight to house the people in our county. The Santa Barbara County AmeriCorps Partnership members commit to their time to ending homelessness and serving veterans throughout Santa Barbara County. We are seeking compassionate individuals who are interested in making a positive impact. Candidates should have a full year of availability, from September 2024 through August 2025.

AmeriCorps members serve as case managers at homeless services sites throughout Santa Barbara County. Members support housing placement and housing retention programs benefiting people experiencing homelessness. Services are focused on principles of “Housing First,” choice and empowerment, collaborative case management, use of evidence-based practices, appropriate interventions for each target population, and are recovery oriented. Members are assigned to a nonprofit or public agency within our partnership for their term of service.

Donations go to local veterans & people experiencing homelessness through United Way and our partners. In 2022, honors, as part of a graduation ceremony, have been handed out to those helping the homeless in programs throughout Santa Barbara County coordinated by AmeriCorps. The efforts were wide ranging including those who work directly on the streets, and others who are in services that can provide health, employment or housing aid. Read the full story.
